She/They

Nicole Frydman has been swing dancing longer than probably most of the Bubble City Swing participants have been alive - 28 years! But even before that, she’s been a fan of swingin’ jazz music since an early age. Her father loved it and played it around the house so when the swing “fad” of the mid-90’s came her way while she was at school in NYC, it was a natural match. Over the years, she’s taught, she’s competed, she’s won some stuff, she’s judged some stuff and even head judged for a few of those big events, she was in a movie because of her dancing, and she’s gotten to travel the world teaching and performing. In addition to the dance, she was the lead singer of 3 swing bands, including her own. She’s seen and done a lot, and still loves it. But she especially loves the chance to bring this beautiful art form to new folks and watch them fall in love just like she did.

Classes

Variations

Saturday, September 19th
10-11:30 AM
Illini Union Ballroom
Level: Intermediate-Advanced
(should be so comfortable with fundamental moves that adding onto them is the right level of challenge)

Here’s a funny quote: “beginners make mistakes, advanced dancers do variations!”. And while that’s definitely not true (advanced dancers are always making mistakes!), it’s a fun way to think about growing as a dancer. This class will present some variations on fundamental moves like swingouts, charleston, and footwork, that can really level up your dancing.

Swingout Bootcamp

Saturday, September 19th
12:30-2 PM
Illini Union Ballroom
Level: Beginner-Intermediate and up (should be able to dance a swingout with a basic level of competency)

While the swingout is a fundamental move within Lindy Hop dance vocabulary, it’s actually a really complicated thing to become an expert at! Everyone, no matter how advanced they get, can use a periodic check in on why this move is so hard to master. Join this class to dig into the details and really hone your skills.
